Physical Wellness – It is More Than Just Being Healthy and Fit

We, as humans, need to maintain a physical state where we can thrive in our environment.  We need to be able to overcome the tasks and stressors that occur day-in and day-out.  We need to stay pain free and comfortable in our own skin.  We need to be able to do and enjoy the things that make us happy.  We need to prevent sickness. We need to stay physically independent for the entirety of our lives.  We need to be healthy and fit.

Wow, thanks captain obvious….

Sure, but being “healthy” or “fit” – although correct – only describes 1/2 of the concept.

Being “Healthy and Fit” is an outcome based term.  You either are or you are not.  It does not really define the practice of getting to and maintaining health and fitness.  Even the World Health Organization defines health as the “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being…” It does not account for the fact that health is a dynamic process constantly adjusting to the changing demands of everyday life.

Health and fitness is something we need to maintain our entire lives, which is to say, we need a method of obtaining and retaining a necessary health and fitness level for our age, gender, body type, etc.

Therefore, we need a behavior based term.  Something that can encapsulate the physical and mental actions and processes we must take in order to achieve the label of being “healthy and fit.”

So what term or phrase properly encompasses us having an understanding of and control over the things that affect our physical body’s ability to remain healthy while adjusting to the changing demands of everyday life

Lets start with “Wellness”

The National Wellness Institute defined “Wellness” as:

“An active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.”

“A conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving your full potential.”

So wellness is understanding the things that affect healthy living, and learning how to influence and control them.

…thats a good start

The National Wellness Institute further categorized the various aspects of a person that feed there overall Wellness.  These categories are:

  1. Occupational
  2. Emotional
  3. Spiritual
  4. Intellectual
  5. Social
  6. Physical

Therefore, as a logical progression…

Physical Wellness is the understanding of the things that affect our physical body’s ability to live healthily, and learning how to influence and control those things throughout all stages of life.

Bingo!!!

That is why it I offer the Nomadic Physical Wellness System.  It provides a structured way to obtain and maintain the behavior of physical wellness, which results in the outcome of being healthy and fit.
